Colchester praised for range of places to go eating and drinking

COLCHESTER is in the top two per cent of places to go out eating and drinking in the country.

The eating and drinking economy has been estimated as worth £240 million a year helping the borough to rank 28th out of more than 2,200 centres.

This means it is classed as a major centre according to a new report.

The “place settings” assessment, by information consultancy CACI, ranks places and highlights any development potential in the leisure market.

Colchester’s eating and drinking market is bigger than all the surrounding centres including Chelmsford, at £170m, Southend’s £180m and Ipswich’s £230m.

And the town could move even further up the table as this is before the ambitious £500m regeneration of Colchester town centre – which is expected to offer new cafes, bars and restaurants – including the regeneration of St Botolph’s.
